When does the program start and end?
May 26, 2017 till August 16, 2017.
How do I enroll my child into the summer reading program?
Students will be enrolled into the summer reading program by the school library media specialist before the last day of school for the 2016-17 school year.
How does my new kindergartner/new student enroll into the summer reading program?
If your child is attending 2017 summer school program, ask their summer school librarian to enroll them into the program or you could contact the school librarian at the school your child will attend for the 2017-18 school year.
How much do I need to read?
Each child has set a goal for the number of minutes they are trying to read this summer.
What if I reach my summer reading goal before school starts?
Keep reading! Reading your goal was great but if you read more than that it makes you a SUPERSTAR READER!
What do I earn if I reach my reading goal?
You will earn a pizza party with ‘Bruiser’ the Kearney Bulldog Mascot and a picture with ‘Bruiser’.
How do we log our reading minutes?
You can use the website form for the school you attend, you can use a paper log sheet or you may use the color sheet to record your reading minutes. Choose any of these forms that best fits your style. If you use paper just make sure you don’t lose it or forget to turn in in on the first day of school.
How often do I need to log my reading minutes?
You can log your reading minutes as often as you want---everyday, once a week or once a month. All we ask is that you have all your minutes recorded (on the website or on your paper log sheet) before the first day of school. The first day of school is August 17, 2017!
If I choose not to use the website to log my reading minutes, where should I turn-in my reading log sheet?
You may give it to your classroom teacher or to your school’s librarian.
What if I lose my paper reading log?
If you have lost your paper log, just print another one and start using it or just start using the log on the summer reading website!
What if I forget how to get onto the summer reading website?
Just visit the Kearney School’s website and click on the link for summer reading. On that page, you should see your school and a link to contact your school’s librarian. Just drop her an email and she will help you!
Can I only read books?
No, you can read magazines, newspapers, electronic books from Mid-Continent public library, or really any type of material. Just read!
Does it count if someone reads to me or with me?
Yes! Reading with a someone is a great way to spend time together.
Can I count books that I read for other reading contests?
Yes! See the MCPL tab about Mid-Continent’s Program. You can be in both.
Can I count a book that I read more than once?
Yes, you are reading so it counts but after about the third time you should give another book a chance!
When are the district libraries open this summer?
Your child may read materials from anywhere.
The Dogwood and Southview Libraries are open to all district students, not just those who attend Summer School and not just those who go to school at that elementary school during the regular year, during summer school hours, June 6-30 8:30 a.m. - 3:15 p.m.
Kearney Elementary Library is also open to all district elementary-age students during Reader’s Roundup July 10-21 9 am till noon.
